Ferrari SF90 Stradale revealed; 1000hp 4.0TT V8 hybrid

Brett Davis

Following some teasers earlier in the week and plenty of rumours, Ferrari has now unveiled its second hybrid vehicle, and its first-ever series production plug-in hybrid. Welcome to the Ferrari SF90 Stradale.

Let’s get straight to the point. Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. The capacity is increased from the 3.9-litre unit found in the F8 Tributo and 488 thanks to a larger bore size (88mm). It produces a whopping 574kW and 800Nm on its own. This is supplemented by three electric motors that produce 162kW, offering an electric-only range of 25km.

Combine it all together and you’ll left with truly mind-blowing figures. The output is the magic 1000hp. Well actually it’s metric horsepower. But still, that translates to 736kW. As you can imagine it brings incredible acceleration especially when all of it is sent through all four wheels. Across 0-100km/h Ferrari says the clock stops in just 2.5 seconds, while 0-200km/h takes 6.7 seconds.

The gearbox is an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic which is 7kg lighter in weight than the current seven-speed unit. A further 3kg is shaved thanks to the removal of reverse gear. Instead, reverse is provided by the power of the front electric motors. Speaking of weight, the dry weight is just 1570kg, which is very impressive for a plug-in hybrid.

As for the design, engineers worked towards providing both downforce and aerodynamic efficiency at all-new levels. Engineers worked closely with the Ferrari Design team to come up with the optimum package. The result is 390kg of downforce at 250km/h, which sets a new benchmark in its class for a road car, while the design is as beautiful as ever.

Inside, passengers are treated to a single 16-inch digital screen which is curved toward the driver. Ferrari says this is the first time this type of screen has been fitted to a production road car. With the car switched off, everything goes black to provide an elegant and clutter-free look.

The steering wheel houses an abundant variety of controls, besides pointing the direction of the car. In fact, Ferrari says the driver can “control virtually every aspect” of the car without taking his or her hands off the wheel. There is of course the traditional ‘Manettino’ switch for the driving modes as well.

Ferrari will launch the new model soon, with Australian prices yet to be confirmed. Check out the highlight specs below for more on this magnificent beast.
