Volkswagen Golf GTI 3-door coming back to Australia

The three-door Volkswagen Golf GTI will return to Australia later this year, albeit in a limited run of 150 cars, coinciding with the Mk7.5 update.

Known as the Golf GTI Performance Edition 1, this model is distinguished by a standard limited-slip differential on DSG-equipped variants, along with a power boost. The 2.0-litre turbo engine has been massaged to 180kW (up 11), while torque jumps to 370Nm from 350Nm. A six-speed manual will also be available.

Unique red highlights and 19-inch wheels set the Edition 1 apart from its lesser ilk. Inside, it gets partial leather trim, adaptive cruise, colour TFT instrument screen, rear-cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam and a darker window tint. Volskwagen Group Australia managing director Michael Bartsch said:

“The hot hatch on which all others are implicity based is the Golf GTI. This version is one for the purists.”

Available from August, only two colours will be on offer: White Silver or Dark Iron Blue. Volkswagen’s new Golf GTI will be available from June with the rest of the Mk7.5 range, with the R and this Edition 1 following a month later. Prices will be announced next week.

Each customer of the special edition receives a complimentary ‘Merchandise Pack’, taken from the GTI Collection. Valued at $340 it’s packed with a sport bag, cup, folding box, beach towel, and umbrella.
