First Tesla Model 3 deliveries commence, full specs revealed

Brett Davis

The first Tesla Model 3 orders have been delivered with a special ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Fremont, California.

It’s been a long wait for tech fans and Tesla enthusiasts, but now the Model 3 is finally here. The first Model 3, featuring the vehicle identification number 001, was handed over today to the first customer order.

Along with the first deliveries, Tesla has also released all official specifications and details for the first time. While we’ve known bits and pieces over the past 12 months or so, now, it’s confirmed the Model 3 comes in two battery pack options.

The regular version offers an EPA-estimated range of 354km, while a long-range battery option, costing US$9000, takes it to 500km. Acceleration is also confirmed, with the 0-60mph (97km/h) sprint coming up in 5.6 seconds, or 5.1 seconds with the larger battery.

Inside, the Model 3 comes with a 15-inch touch-screen display system offering all on-board controls and functions, with dual-zone climate control, internet streaming capability, and Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity. There’s also a rear-view camera with eight external cameras in total twelve ultrasonic sensors.

Automatic emergency braking is standard, while enhanced autopilot is a US$5000 option. Full self-driving capability will also be a US$3000 option but this will be available dependant on software validation and on laws and market region regulations.

Prices in the U.S. start from $35,000, with Australian prices yet to be confirmed. It is expected to kick off at around the $60,000 mark though, and is set to arrive locally some time in 2019.
