Fate of the Furious smashes box office debut record

The Fate of the Furious has set box office records for the biggest international debut of all time, grossing US$600 million during its opening over the Easter long weekend, with the film screening in over 63 countries and territories. It has beat out the $US529 million of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and $316.7mil of Jurassic World.

Universal’s Nick Carpou called the number “an extraordinary result,” adding: “Each one of these films has its own momentum. There are factors from one film to the next that make them unique and certainly there were unique factors with Furious 7.”

While the following week saw a decline in movie attendance, that hasn’t stopped the studio pressing ahead with a spin-off starring Jason Statham and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s characters. The spin-off, by writer Chris Morgan, could be produced before the ninth instalment due in 2019, apparently based in our very own sun-burnt country.

The Fate of the Furious is still showing in cinemas at the time of writing.
