2020 Mitsubishi Pajero announced for Australia

Yes, we assumed it was discontinued as well. But it looks like it’s back for another year. Introducing the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero.

The lineup has been streamlined to just two variants for MY2020, with the GLX and GLS. Both continue on with the same chassis and powertrain, but safety and technology has been improved in some areas from the outgoing models.

Under the bonnet sits the same 3.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that produces 147kW at 3800rpm, and 441Nm at 2000rpm. This is connected up to an extensive four-wheel drive system incorporating Mitsubishi’s Super Select II driving mode functions.

Both the GLX and GLS come with this, offering the driver 2H (RWD), 4H, 4HLc (locked centre diff), and 4LLc (low range, locked centre diff). In 4H the system distributes the power at a ratio of 33:67, front to rear, and the centre diff is open so drivers can enjoy four-wheel drive regardless of the conditions.

So, what’s actually new for 2020? Well, since the previous flagship Exceed has been dropped, the GLS receives its 12-speaker Rockford Fosgate sound system which includes a sub-woofer in the back. Both variants now come with automatic high-beam headlights, with HID lamps with auto levelling and washers added to the GLX. Strangely, only the GLS comes with an auto-on function for the main beams.

Other than these minor changes it looks like the Pajero soldiers on in the same spec as before. This will likely go down well with traditional buyers and 4×4 enthusiasts who have enjoyed the Pajero’s rugged dependability and user-friendliness for decades. Speaking about the model update, John Signoriello, Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO, said:

“The authenticity and capability of the Pajero is what our customers like the most. Pajero drivers know they can depend on it when they take on their next challenge – whether that means heading out to the outback or towing. It’s an iconic part of our Australian product lineup.”
