Toyota is getting ready to unveil the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla sedan, following the introduction of the sporty new hatchback earlier this year. The new sedan is set to be based on the same TNGA platform as the hatch.
A teaser has been handed out to build anticipation for the new sedan’s unveiling, which will take place at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition later this week. The teaser doesn’t reveal much except for a silhouetted outline of the side profile.
The new sedan is set to be based on the latest Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform which has since been rolled out for the latest Prius, Camry, C-HR, and the new Corolla hatch. With this platform we can expect good things in terms of improved rigidity and driving dynamics, handling and fun, and optimised cabin space.
Under the bonnet the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder hybrid as featured in the hatch is likely, producing a combined output of 90kW. A new 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol is also available in the hatch, producing an impressive 125kW. Almost all variants of the hatch (in Australia) come matched to a CVT automatic transmission.
As for the design, well, the 2019 Corolla sedan will probably share a similar front end as the hatchback. It is arguably one of the sportiest-looking Corolla generations, with an integrated front spoiler section, angular headlights, and a big gapping front grille. At the rear we should probably anticipate inverted-L-shaped taillights, a curvy rear bumper bar, and potentially a lip spoiler for some variants.
All will be revealed on November 16, at the Guangzhou show. An Australian on-sale date is yet to be officially confirmed. In a statement, Toyota UK spoke a few words about the new sedan, saying:
“Toyota will give the all-new Corolla saloon its world premiere presentation at the Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition in China on 16 November. The saloon is the third body style to be announced in the 12th generation Corolla model line-up, following the recently revealed hatchback and Touring Sports.”
