Toyota Australia has announced local pricing and specifications for the all-new Toyota Fortuner seven-seat SUV. It sits in the showroom as one of the most off-road-capable models.
The Fortuner is based on the new HiLux ute, featuring a robust platform suitable for everything from heavy-duty off-roading to doing the family errands. Toyota says the vehicle has been designed and developed by local engineers for local conditions.
Starting with the powertrain options, the Fortuner comes with only one choice; a newly-developed 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder churning out 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque (420Nm for manual versions).
Performance figures haven’t been mentioned, however, fuel consumption is rated at 7.8L/100km for the manual and 8.6L/100km for the six-speed auto. All variants are Euro 5 emissions compliant.
Three main variant grades land in Australia, spanning from the GX, the GXL, and the top Crusade. All feature coil-spring suspension at all four corners, with a double wishbone setup at the front and a live-axle five-link rear end. A locking differential is standard, and all are four-wheel drive.
In terms of the off-road credentials, the Fortuner offers a 30-degree approach angle, 25-degree departure angle, and a 23.5-degree ramp-over angle. Ground clearance is rated at an impressive 279mm, which is more than you get in the LandCruiser. It also offers a water crossing depth of 700mm, with plenty of underbody protection.
Standard features, at minimum, include 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, a rear-view camera, an 80-litre fuel tank, and a 7.0-inch touch-screen interface with a six-speaker stereo. The Crusade adds digital radio, sat-nav, power driver’s seat, 18-inch wheels, and a 220V/100W accessory socket.
Despite offering a similar set of skills, the Prado will continue to be sold alongside the Fortuner. Toyota estimates around 6000 Fortuners to be sold next year, which would be overshadowed by the Prado which last year was sold to 16,112 buyers.
