Opel is planning to unveil its entry into the Touring Car Racing series based on the Astra at the Frankfurt Motor Show, releasing this preview to build anticipation.
The Opel Astra TCR car is being developed for the new Touring Car Racing series which started this year. This means it will adhere to all regulations and specifications, ready to go racing.
At the moment the car is still undergoing final development, with Opel saying final specifications will be announced down the track. However, it is believed it will come with a 2.0-litre turbo engine producing around 240kW and 410Nm.
Aside from a potent engine, the car, based on the 2016 Astra, features massive aero revisions compared with the road car including a custom front bumper bar and splitter system, chunky-as-hell side skirts, and a huge rear wing. Opel Group CMO Tina Müller said,
“Touring car racing has always been an important part of Opel. The philosophy of the new TCR series corresponds to our idea of customer racing. We want to give ambitious privately owned teams a platform for exciting sport at reasonable costs.”
Opel will being testing the vehicle out on the track in October, shortly after its big reveal at Frankfurt. The motor show starts on September 17.
