2019 BMW X5 Australian lineup confirmed, debuts quad-turbo engine

Brett Davis

Initial pricing and specs for the all-new 2019 BMW X5 have been announced for Australia. It will go on sale in November, introducing the first quad-turbo for the country.

Two variants will be offered initially, spanning from the xDrive30d to the potent M50d sporty diesel from M Performance. Both are powered by a 3.0-litre diesel inline six. However, the 30d uses a single variable-geometry ‘TwinPower’ turbocharger to produce 195kW and 620Nm, while the new M50d introduces quad turbochargers. This is the first time this engine is being offered in Australia. It produces an impressive 294kW and a whopping 760Nm.

The 30d version promises a 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds, while the M50d does the sprint in a claimed 5.2 seconds. Official fuel consumption averages are yet to be confirmed for Australia, but both use an eight-speed automatic with all-wheel drive.

For the first time for the X5, local customers are being offered a range of suspension setups. There’s adaptive two-axle air suspension which offers a self-levelling pneumatic system that can also be adjusted to five different ride heights ranging across 80mm. And there’s a new xOffroad Package for the 30d that combines the air suspension with an electronically-controlled driving mode tuned for off-road conditions. Modes include xSand, xRocks, xGravel and xSnow, each altering the steering, accelerator, transmission and stability control.

As standard, the 30d will come with the Comfort Access system, Driving Assistance Professional with surround-view monitoring, Active Cruise Control with stop&go, and adaptive LED headlights, taillights, and fog lights. It also comes with 20-inch alloy wheels (optional sizes from 19in to 21in), as well as two 12.3-inch high-res digital displays including one for the instrument cluster and another for the media interface. The media interface incorporates BMW’s next-gen iDrive 7.0 running software.

Going for the M50d adds 22-inch wheels, soft-close doors, four-zone climate control, a higher-end stereo system, and the usual M Performance mechanical enhancements. Some the enhancements include big brakes with blue-painted calipers, an M Aerodynamics bodykit, and various sporty details inside and out.

The new model will officially go on sale in November this year as mentioned, with prices starting from the following (excluding on-road costs). BMW Australia says the new model offers the highest level of comfort and practicality ever seen in the X5. It’s expected to see sales soar for the nameplate.
