This newly-built 2014 Ford GT40 replica is a real piece of work that’s been created with the original in mind, but with some of the latest mechanical trickery available. As far as replicas go, they don’t come much more exciting when a car builder gets a GT40 just right.
Sitting in the middle of the car is a quad-cam Ford ‘Coyote’ Mustang 5.0-litre V8 that uses eight individual aluminium throttle bodies. The engine features a drive-by-wire system, a MoTeC M150 to control the smarts, and breathes out of custom made 1.25-inch crossover ceramic-coated headers and an ADR-compliant twin 2.5-inch exhaust system.
Naturally, this GT40 features a stick shift six-speed heavy-duty Getrag transaxle transmission and a limited-slip differential – because no GT40 built to semi-replicate the original would be the same with an automatic transmission, would it? Bolted up to the gearbox is a high performance twin-plate organic clutch and a billet flywheel, with power being sent to the wheels through a custom set of CV drive shafts.
Keeping the GT40 keen on its heels is a full race suspension setup, which includes fully adjustable suspension arms and adjustable shocks, as well as an adjustable 22mm front sway bar. Braking comes thanks to AP Racing four-piston items at each corner, along with DBA rotors (324mm front, 315mm rear).
Output for this GT40 replica sits at around 365kW and 520Nm; more than enough to propel the lightweight build to some serious speeds. The car is made up of a steel space frame with bonded and riveted aluminium panels, and features a full fibreglass body and a four-point roll cage with harness mounts.
If you consider all the listed performance equipment, you’d think this Ford replica wouldn’t be suited for the road, yet the interior features air-conditioning, VDO gauges to monitor all of the systems, studded black leather seats (like the original GT40 road car), an engine immobiliser for security, and a gorgeous 13-inch British-made Mota-Lita steering wheel.
