Lexus has launched the new-look 2012 Lexus RX SUV range in Australia. The new lineup, including the RX 270, RX 350, and RX 450h, showcases Lexus’s fresh design language incorporating the spindle grille layout.
Starting at the beginning of the range, the 2012 Lexus RX 270 is a brand new entry-level model, not featured in previous RX ranges. It features a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine producing 138kW of power and 252Nm of torque, matched up to a six-speed automatic transmission.
Standard features include satellite navigation, a reversing camera with guide assist, a power rear tailgate, eight-way power seats, leather-accented interior, a 12-speaker audio system, Lexus’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) stability program, daytime running lights, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Lexus Australia chief executive Tony Cramb recently spoke about the introduction of an entry-level model, saying,
“For some time now Lexus customers have been asking about the availability of a smaller SUV suited to city driving – and with RX 270 they’ll get the space they need with the power they require.
“RX 270 is ideally suited to those who use their vehicle to transport the family around the city and surrounds – evident in its outstanding sales throughout Asia.”
Acceleration from 0-1oom/h has been rated at 11.0 seconds, while combined fuel economy is rated at 9.7L/100km.
Next up is the new 2012 Lexus RX 350. It comes with the company’s 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 204kW of power and 346Nm of torque, matched up to a six-speed automatic transmission.
On top of the RX 270’s features list, the RX 350 comes with Lexus Active Torque Control all-wheel drive. The system distributes engine torque to the front wheels under normal conditions, while under initial acceleration, and when front wheel slip is detected, power is sent to the rear wheels as well.
The drive incorporates an electromagnetic coupling to engage and disengage all-wheel drive. In the cabin, there is also an on-demand AWD lock button that can be selected at speeds up to 40km/h for when travelling off road.
Acceleration from 0-1oom/h has been rated at 8.0 seconds, while combined fuel economy is rated at 10.8L/100km.
Topping out the range is the 2012 Lexus RX 450h hybrid. It’s powered by a slightly detuned version of the 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, producing 183kW of power and 317Nm of torque. An Atkinson cycle electric motor is integrated into the engine bay providing up to 123kW, while a third 50kW electric motor also assists propulsion with power sent to the rear wheels. An overall combined power output has been rated at 220kW.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h has been tested at 7.8 seconds, while combined fuel economy is rated at a remarkably low 6.3L/100km.
The 2012 Lexus RX range is split up into three trim levels; the Luxury, the F Sport, and the Sports Luxury, except for the RX 270 which is only available in one trim. Each offers varying degrees of luxury and equipment, and in the F Sport’s case, enhanced handling and driving performance.
