Prototypes of the much-anticipated Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 have been spotted in Europe again, confirming there is a high-powered V8 model just around the corner for the GLC range.
The GLC 63 will be one of only two V8-powered SUVs in the mid-size premium class, joining the equally exciting V8 version of the Jaguar F-Pace which has also been spotted in prototype form in recent months.
Not only will the GLC 63 be part of a rare breed when it arrives on the market next year, it will also be the first V8 SUV from Mercedes in this specific class. The previous-gen model, called the GLK (not sold in Australia), was only available with engine configurations up to V6.
For the new model it’s understood the GLC 63 will come with AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that is also used in vehicles like the C 63. It’s expected to adopt the 375kW tune, out of the possible 350kW, 375kW and 430kW options Mercedes currently offers for the unit. This should give the F-Pace V8 a run for its money, especially if Jaguar decides to use its 375kW 5.0-litre supercharged V8 – it also has a variety of tunes to choose from, spanning 368kW, 375kW, 405kW and 423kW.
Aside from the V8 monster under the bonnet, the GLC 63 is likely to adopt plenty of performance highlights and body trimmings, largely borrowed from the currently-available, twin-turbo V6 GLC 43 AMG. The V8 model will probably get slightly wider wheels/tyres and possibly bigger brakes, but the bulging wheel arches and front and rear spoilers are set to carry over.
Unlike the GLC 43, the driveline may use the seven-speed automatic from the C 63 as opposed to the nine-speed in the 43. However, it is expected to be used along with 4Matic all-wheel drive. This should help the beast conquer the 0-100km/h sprint in well under the 4.9-second time achieved by the 270kW GLC 43.
According to reports Mercedes is looking to debut the new model at the Geneva motor show in March. A potential Australian introduction would likely fall some time during the second half of 2017. Take a look at the most recent spy videos below for a refresh on what to expect.
