If you thought the BMW 3 Series sedan was pretty popular, you’d be right. The company has just produced the 10 millionth example, at the BMW Group plant in Munich, Germany.
10 million is quite an impressive milestone for any model vehicle, let alone a mid-size luxury sedan. BMW says that over 14 million 3 Series models have been produced in total, including the wagon and convertible versions.
The BMW factory in Munich is the only one in the world that has produced all six generations of the 3 Series over the years. As such, the plant has been continuously updated to facilitate technology changes for each of the model generations. Hermann Bohrer, plant director at the BMW Group facility, said,
“The success story of the BMW 3 Series started here in Plant Munich and is now reaching a very special highpoint here as well. The fact that this landmark vehicle was produced at our plant is a particular honour for us and makes me very proud indeed of my team.”
BMW also produces the 3 Series in Regensburg in Germany, and in South Africa (Rosslyn), and in China (Tiexi). Production of the recently updated 2016 model kicked off at these facilities in July. Depending on the variant in specific, 3 Series examples for the Australian market are built in Germany and some are made in South Africa.
The milestone vehicle that tipped past the 10 million mark was a left-hand drive 320d dressed in Imperial Blue. It features a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder producing 140kW and 400Nm, capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 7.2 seconds. This variant is available in Australia.
