Ford has unveiled the new 2013 Ford Mondeo (Fusion in US markets) on the eve of the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new model is set to go on sale in Australia in 2013.
With the new model comes a variety of new environmentally focused powertrains. These include a top-spec 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost unit producing 177kW of power and 339Nm of torque; a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 133kW and 233Nm; and two hybrid variants.
Ford is claiming the new 2013 Ford Mondeo will offer class-leading fuel economy across the range, with the hybrid and plug-in hybrid being the most efficient. The plug-in is also promising to be the most fuel-efficient mid-size car in the world, hitting the 100MPGe (equivalent, 2.3L/100km [US], 2.8L/100km [UK]) mark.
The 2013 Ford Mondeo also features loads of innovative technologies, some of which are a first for this vehicle segment. These include Lane Keeping and adaptive cruise control, active park assist, and Ford’s MyFord Touch infotainment dash interface.
As for the design of the 2013 Ford Mondeo, the front end features a very Aston-Martin-like front grille and fascia layout, while the rear possesses Ford’s latest design language, with plenty of kinks and curves. From the side profile, it’s easy to see the Mondeo heritage.
Inside, the new Mondeo features a clean and crisp decor with silver/titanium highlights, and a modern central fasica. The centre armrest is designed to cocoon the driver in, and provide ample storage, while next-gen seating provides increased versatility.
Ford has said the new model has been created as a driver’s car as well, thanks to a body structure which is 10 per cent stronger than the outgoing model. This is promising to provide accurate and agile handling, while an all-new multi-link rear suspension system will keep the rear in check.
Full details on the Australian-specification 2013 Ford Modeo are expected to be released later this year.
