Burnout and drifting enthusiasts will be excited to hear Lamborghini has unveiled the new Huracan LP 580-2 rear-wheel drive V10 supercar.
As previously suspected, Lamborghini was indeed planning a rear-drive version of its newest model. Lamborghini says it has been designed for “driving fun”, allowing drivers to interpret the feedback from the car and connect with the road or track.
The company has made various technological changes to the car to accommodate two-wheel drive and to maintain driving dynamics. Revisions have been made to the springs and anti-roll bars, and to the steering.
Wheel sizes are unique as well, wearing 19-inch “Kari” alloys with 245/35 front and 305/35 rear Pirelli P-Zero tyres that have been exclusively developed for the LP 580-2. Weighing in at 1389kg (dry), the 580-2 is 33kg lighter than the regular all-wheel drive version. The weight is distributed 40:60 front:rear, and the management system has been recalibrated to facilitate that.
Engine power is capped to 426kW, down from 449kW in the regular LP 610-4 version, although peak torque remains at 540Nm. Up to 75 per cent of the torque is available from just 1000rpm.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes 3.4 seconds, extended from 3.2 seconds in the AWD model. The engine also features cylinder-deactivation technology, with an average consumption of 11.9L/100km. Speaking about the new variant, Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann said;
“The rear-wheel drive model fits perfectly into our Huracan family, appealing to those wanting an even more intense driving experience, or who currently drive other rear-wheel-drive marques and aspire to driving a Lamborghini. This is the purest expression of a Lamborghini to date, with class-leading technological refinements. It is a serious car for serious drivers: it is maximum driving fun.”
Aside from the mechanical changes, the 580-2 also comes with slightly redesigned front and rear ends. Lamborghini Australia says local prices will start at $378,900 when it arrives here next year.
