A celebrity car of a different kind is going up for auction, the Eleanor Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds. The famous car will go under the hammer at the COYS international auction event held at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, UK, on January 14.
We’ve seen a handful of celebrity’s cars for sale over the last few months in Cool Finds, but this time it’s the car itself that is the celebrity. Technically a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, Eleanor, as it was so famously named, was originally a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 in the original 1974 film. This example was the star in the 2000 remake movie with Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie. It was that much of a star it was actually named in the credits.
It features a 351 cubic inch Ford Racing crate motor with a 700cfm Holley carburettor and a big chunky cam. Various other modifications were made for the ultimate on-screen presence and performance, such as full coilover suspension, Wilwood brakes with six-piston calipers, and a set of side-exit exhaust pipes (not functional in the movie but later revised). The Eleanor Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 also features a fuel filler cap mounted on the C-pillar just like the original Mach 1 Mustang.
Only 12 examples were apparently made, with five sacrificed for movie scenes. This one was one of three functional ‘hero’ cars (two that are now owned privately) used for filming shots in the movie with actors. It was also used for action shots with cameras mounted on it and in it.
According to the advert info, the interior and exterior are in good condition, while the engine makes “a satisfying and potent rumble, which sets hairs on end’. The ‘go baby go’ switch on the gear lever for the nitrous system still remains.
The extremely rare and highly sort after classic is expected to fetch around $150,000.
