Holden has pulled the wraps off the new 2014 Holden VF Commodore SS V, less than a week after the first VF was unveiled, a Calais V. The car you see here is dubbed a “show car”, however, the production version is expected to be very similar.
First thing’s first, engine specs? At this stage, unfortunately, Holden hasn’t released anything on what’s under the bonnet. What we can see though is some quite tasty performance features, such as Brembo brakes, a finned diffuser at the back, and an aggressive quad-outlet exhaust system.
Holden is calling the new SV6 and SS the ‘sport luxury’ range, as opposed to the ‘luxury sport’ of the Calais. The badges that we’ve all come used to are likely to remain.
There’s lots of talk about ‘the show car features this..’ by Holden, which suggests what you see here might not be as precisely related to the production car as it seems. The bodykit is expected to remain though, including the neat lip spoiler on the boot and the bulging front spoiler and side skirts.
The SS V show car is coated in a new hero colour called Fantale orange. This is one of three key new colours that the Holden design teams have come up with. The others include Regal Peacock, which is a vibrant green, and Prussian Steel, which is a blue metal-type look.
Inside, show car showcases carbon fibre-look trimmings around the dash, big heavily bolstered bucket seats, and plenty of silver highlights and suede. Holden calls the decor “well-appointed sport luxury: dark-toned, subtle and sophisticated”.
On a pre-production vehicle we saw during our visit to the GM Holden design studio, we saw red stitching around the seats and around the badge on the dash. This may become at least an option on the SS V.
Other unique highlights that we noticed were the headlights and taillights, which were a little bit different on the SS compared with the Calais. On the SS they feature a black plastic backing giving a smoked look, while on the Calais they appear clearer. This, again, may become an option or might only be restricted to the show car.
More details, including potential engine specs, could be revealed during this weekend’s unveiling of the new Chevrolet SS sedan. The Chev sedan has been designed here in Australia along side the VF Commodore. Stay tuned for more details.
Like the rest of the VF range, the Commodore SS V will go on sale during the middle of this year.
