Skoda Octavia vRS Bonneville special breaks 200mph barrier at Speed Week

A specially prepared Skoda Octavia vRS Bonneville special has cracked the 200mph (322km/h) barrier at the current Bonneville Speed Week meet in Utah, USA. The stock 2.0-litre engine hardware was made more useful by the help of a huge Garrett turbocharger pumping around 28psi of boost into the engine.

Since the Skoda is using a stock 2.0-litre block, the Skoda Octavia vRS Bonneville special is competing in the 2.0-litre production car class, and will continue to attempt to crack the world record, currently standing at 216mph (348km/h). Robert Hazelwood, Director for Skoda UK recently said,

“Months of rigorous planning, testing and preparation have all been worthwhile. At 13:24 on Monday 15th August, we took our Octavia vRS past the 200 mph barrier. The entire team has done an outstanding job. Our special thanks go to Richard on an incredible drive.

“This marks another exciting milestone in the brand’s motorsport achievements and is a great way to celebrate 10 years of the vRS range and commemorate 110 years of Skoda’s participation in motorsport.”

The Skoda Bonneville special features a full race roll cage -understandably, an aerodynamic comb-over with very low suspension to help the Octavia cut through the air, and a special high-speed wheel and tyre package. The engine also runs on race fuel and develops around 372kW of power (500hp). It currently stands as the fastest Skoda in the world.

Let’s see if the team can break the world record. Stay tuned.
