Porsche Ferrari-rival confirmed, possible new Porsche 959

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller is planning to bring out a more suitable model to rival Ferrari. Whether it be a new Porsche 550 or a new Porsche 959, Mueller is “irritated” that Ferrari is prancing around in a market segment Porsche doesn’t compete in.

You see, Porsche is having trouble with the price and market gap in between the upcoming Porsche 918 (US845,000) and the top-spec Porsche 911 GT2 RS (US$245,000). In between this price gap there are a number of Ferrari models that are on offer. Mueller recently said in an interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung,

“It always irritated me that the (most expensive) 911 tops out at 250,000 euros ($360,000) and then the 918 continues starting at 750,000 euros (US$845,000).

“In between, Ferrari cavorts around relatively comfortably and without any competition. That is where we need to be.”

Porsche has previously announced that it is going to introduce three new models into the showroom lineup in the near future. This will be part of a goal to increase overall sales above 200,000 units per year by 2018.

What the new Ferrari-rival Porsche will be exactly hasn’t been finalised yet, but earlier this year, reports were circulating around the idea of Porsche developing a Porsche 550 remake and a new Porsche 928 remake called the Porsche 929. Now there are also hints of a new Porsche 959 remake. Mueller said,

“There is still space for a larger sports car, one like the 959 that we built in the 1980s.”

We couldn’t think of anything more appealing than a new Porsche 959, so long as it is engineered to be worthy of carrying the famous, top-speed recording-breaking heritage. What do you think?
