Driven by Sebastien Loeb is one hugely competitive advantage, let alone having a properly set up vehicle backed by Red Bull. It looks like Peugeot Sport has a combination of all.

Competing in the ‘Unlimited’ class, the 208 T16 is powered by a 3.2-litre twin-turbo V6 producing a colossal 652kW of power and 883Nm of torque. The mid-mounted engine sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

So, what sort of performance are we talking here? Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes just 1.8 seconds, while 0-200km/h takes only 4.8 seconds – around the time it takes most really quick sports cars to hit 100km/h.

Part of this astonishing acceleration comes thanks to the lightweight chassis and body setup. The chassis comprises of a seriously rigid and complex steel tubular frame, while the body that wraps around it all is made from carbon fibre. The overall kerb weight is just 875kg.

This is going to be a very interesting year for Pikes Peak. Will Peugeot be able to reclaim and reset the overall record?

The 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb will take place on June 30.
