The facelifted 2020 Mazda2 has been launched in Australia, bringing in a streamlined range, higher-tech features, and some price hikes for some variants.

Just three main trim lines are on sale in Australia, spanning from the G15 Pure, G15 Evolve, and G15 GT. These are then split up with hatch and sedan for the Pure and for the GT, leaving the Evolve in hatch form only. All are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol four-cylinder that produces 82kW and 144Nm, with manual only available on the base Pure versions.

In terms of the new tech, all models now come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the i-Activsense safety suite has been updated to include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and pedestrian detection with Smart City Brake Support as standard. Moving up to the GT adds a 360-degree parking camera system.

Mazda says it has applied the latest Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture principles to the 2020 model, which introduces a new seating structure that “better supports the natural S-curve of the spine” to improve comfort. Underneath it all, Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control Plus system has also been applied for improved stability and handling.

As for the design, the front end is updated with a new, wider grille with wings that meet the bottom of the headlights, with mesh in the middle. Both the front and rear bumper bars are also revised and go for a more horizontal theme, with unique trimmings in the corners for a more elegant touch. LED headlights are also integrated along with fresh fog lights.

Lastly, some new-look 16-inch alloy wheels are introduced for some variants, along with 15-inch wheels for others. Speaking about the new model, Mazda’s director of marketing, Alastair Doak, said:

“The 2020 update to Mazda2 adds some premium safety technology never-before-seen in vehicles at this price point in Australia. We added a 360-degree camera in addition to a suite of active safety features, giving customers of our smallest vehicle greater peace of mind and confidence while driving.”

Mazda says the new model is on sale in Australia as of December, with prices starting from the following (excluding on-road costs). All are covered by Mazda’s latest five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.
