Some updates for Australia’s favourite upper-large SUV have been announced in the form of the 2019 Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series. A majority of the updates concentrate on safety and driver assistance systems.

As standard, the popular LandCruiser GXL variant (pictured, with optional snorkel) now comes standard with some of the tech previously reserved for the VX, including front and rear parking sensors and a digital 4.2-inch instrument cluster display. Meanwhile, the VX gets rear cross-traffic alert, a four-camera terrain and parking monitor system, and blind-spot monitoring.

Other updates include a leather-wrapped steering wheel for the GXL. It adds audio and phone controls. Meanwhile, the VX features a unique under-car camera display when low range is activated, allowing users to navigate obstacles more accurately.

The GXL continues to come with 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a rear cooler, side steps, a 220V rear socket, smart entry and start, and a rear-view camera and sat-nav as standard. The VX continues with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and fog lights, leather seats, a moon roof, and woodgrain-look interior trimmings.

Toyota vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said the updates help to continue to improve the vehicle to meet customer expectations. In a statement, he said:

“The Toyota LandCruiser has been an Australian favourite since it first arrived here, regularly praised for its comfortable and extremely competent ability to get to the most remote corners of the country… and back. Part of that ability comes from its advanced technology to assist drivers whatever the terrain they come across and the upgrades we are introducing for the mid-range GXL and VX models, further aids that assistance.”

Engine options continue unchanged, with the GXL, VX, and Sahara featuring either a 4.6-litre petrol V8 producing 227kW and 439Nm, or a 4.5-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel that generates 200kW and 650Nm. The entry-level LandCruiser GX continues as is, with the diesel engine only.

The updated model is on sale now with prices starting from the following, with only minor increases (all exclude on-road costs):

2019 Toyota LandCruiser GX 4.5TTD – $78,190

2019 Toyota LandCruiser GXL 4.6L – $84,480
