The Toyota 86 is celebrating 100,000 international sales, and surprisingly, a whopping 10 per cent of those are from Australians.

Toyota 86 GTS

Since the popular sports coupe went on sale in June 2012, 10,363 customers in Australia have bought one. That means one in every 10 examples that is sold throughout the world is owned by an Australian.

According to Toyota Australia, buyers are loving the 86’s style, performance, balance, and handling. The low starting price is also particularly appealing. Tony Cramb, Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing, said,

“The Toyota 86 has become a halo car that demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to designing and engineering cars that really get your heart pumping.

“Importantly, the passion inside Toyota that led to the 86 is also resulting in more emotional styling and greater driving enjoyment in other Toyota vehicles such as the latest generations of RAV4, Corolla and Kluger.”

Around 80 per cent of all local purchases are from private buyers, of which a large chunk are new to Toyota and first-time car buyers. The fact that it’s one of the only truly desirable P-plate certified vehicles makes it especially appealing for young buyers.
