Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4² revealed in further detail

Remember the Mercedes G 63 AMG 6×6? The monstrous all-terrain tank that shouts, ‘I am the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the auto world’, now has a smaller brother. Meet the Mercedes-Benz G 500 4×4².

Mercedes has released what it dubs as a “near-series concept”, taking the existing recipe of insane off-road ability, military-like styling and a splashing of bling from the G 63 6×6, and photocopied it at 75 per cent or so.

Described by Mercedes as resembling a “sports car rather than a cross-country vehicle”, this is largely due to the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. It produces 310kW, up from the regular G 500’s 285kW rating. No performance details have been released just yet, in terms of acceleration, but the company has confirmed the engine meets Euro 6 emissions standards, including the maximum particulate emissions level that will not take effect until 2016.

The chassis is based on the production series G-Class, but features a new adjustable damper system, with two parallel spring and dampers for each wheel that can be adjusted between comfort and sport in 15 milliseconds.

Exterior highlights include a unique twin side-exit exhaust system, stainless steel underbody protection, and 22-inch wheels (or optional 18-inch wheels with 37-inch heavy-duty tyres). Mercedes is tight-lipped about the interior of the car, but promises a luxurious contrast to the exterior of the car, with leather seats adorned with diamond quilted DINAMICA accents.

The new portal axles fitted to the G 500 differ from the conventional setup, where the wheels would normally sit at the same height as the axle. On top of a 300mm width extension, the wheels sit much lower due to the portal transmission, which raises the ground clearance to 450mm and increases the diving depth of the chassis to 1000mm.

Mercedes said the decision whether to put the 4×4 into production will be made based on the public’s reaction from the unveiling of the concept, at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
