Mazda2 update on sale in Australia from $14,990, sedan variant added

Brett Davis

Following the introduction of the cute new Mazda2 hatch in November last year, the sedan variant has now been added to the range.

2015 Mazda2 Maxx sedan-blue

The Mazda2 sedan is available in only two trim levels, including the base Neo and mid-range Maxx, while the flagship Genki can be had in hatch form only. It shouldn’t bother punters too much though as the Neo now comes standard with cruise control, Bluetooth, keyless push-button start, and rear parking sensors as standard.

Moving up to the Maxx gets you 15-inch alloy wheels, a reversing camera, and an on-board infotainment MZD interface with a 7.0-inch screen. This equipment has been added to the hatch variant of the Maxx for the update, along with the equipment for the Neo hatch.

In the engine compartment sits a 1.5-litre petrol four-cylinder producing a mighty 79kW of power and 139Nm of torque for the Neo, while the Maxx gets an 81kW/141Nm version of the same engine. Fuel economy averages span from 5.4L/100km for the manual Neo, and drop as low as 4.9L/100km for the auto Maxx.

Buyers can select between eight exterior colours for the sedan, including a new Titanium Flash Mica. Smoky Rose Mica is reserved for the hatch variants only, with Soul Red metallic being a $200 option for both.

So far this year (through July) Mazda Australia has sold 8619 examples of the 2, making it the second most popular vehicle in the class behind the Toyota Yaris (8968). Sales are up 12.9 per cent year-to-date.

The new range is on sale now. Mazda expects the sedan to make up around 15 per cent of overall Mazda2 sales. See below for starting prices (excluding on-road costs):
