Lotus has revealed an all-new Lotus V8 engine is in its final stages of development, releasing a preview image of the new V8 onto its Facebook page. It’s unconfirmed what model Lotus the new V8 engine will go into at this stage, but a likely candidate is the upcoming Lotus Esprit.

Lotus recently revealed the image onto its Facebook page. No specific details of the new Lotus V8 have been released yet, but by the looks of it, the unit uses twin-throttle bodies and twin-plenum chambers for the induction with long intake runners. This kind of setup usually provides plenty of torque.

Other features appear to include double-overhead cams (DOHC), 4-into-1 headers and a unique air intake airbox system. Possible technologies may include direct injection.

This will be the first time Lotus has built its own bespoke in-house engine in a long while, with the current showroom crop using revised Toyota engines. The new unit is likely being developed for the upcoming flagship model, the new Lotus Esprit, however, various tunes may also be used in other future models. Lotus said,

“Our future cars need real soul to power them, a true Lotus bespoke engine – and here it is: CTO Wolf Zimmermann and his team have pulled out all the stops to make this engine perfect. It was all smiles when we had our first engine fire up three weeks ago.”

We’ll bring you more updates and specifications on the new Lotus V8 engine as soon as possible.
