Audi has announced pricing and local specifications for the heart-throbbing new Audi RS 6 Avant. This is the company’s most powerful four-door vehicle currently on the market, featuring a new twin-turbo V8 engine.

Power comes from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, replacing the previous 426kW twin-turbo V10 derived from a Lamborghini unit. Despite the drop in two cylinders and a drop in power, down to only 412kW, torque is increased from 650Nm to a whopping 700Nm.

As a result, acceleration from 0-100km/h is handled in just 3.9 seconds. This kind of supercar-like performance is partly thanks to a comprehensive quattro all-wheel drive system which uses an active centre differential and sport rear differential, as well as an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission.

The main reason for the V8 replacing the V10 is down to economy and emissions. The new V8 returns a very respectable average fuel consumption rating of just 9.8L/100km, which is a 30 per cent improvement on the previous model.

Economy improvements are bolstered by a new cylinder management system which is able to shut down four cylinders under low-load conditions. This technology is a first for an Audi RS model.

Standard highlights for the epic wagon include adaptive air suspension which is able to lower the A6-based rocket ship by 20mm, eye-opening 21-inch alloy wheels, an extensive in-car multimedia interface with digital TV reception, head-up display, a panoramic glass roof, LED headlights, and of course all of the interior and exterior trimmings you’d expect on a RS model.
